The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznań – COP 14 – came to an end on 12 December 2008.It was Europe’s biggest political summit ever organised in Poland and in this part of Europe.

The Conference was officially organised by the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and hosted by the Government of the Republic of Poland, represented by the Ministry of Environment as the coordinating organiser.

According to UNFCCC Secretariat, the Poznań-based summit meeting was attended by more than 12 thousand participants. It was almost 4 thousand more than we had expected. The same number as in Bali a year before. However, despite the impressive turnout the summit itself and all organisational matters proceeded without interruption, confirming the effectiveness of our preparations. This effectiveness was also evidenced by our logistic solutions attracting close attention of guests from Denmark - the hosts of next year's Conference in Copenhagen - stressed Małgorzata Snarska, Head of the team responsible for organisation and promotion of COP 14 on behalf of the Ministry of Environment.

Salva Dallalah from the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn shares this opinion: The delegates were very pleased with the professional COP 14 infrastructure ensured on the grounds of the Poznań International Fair (MTP). Perfect organisation guaranteed all participants excellent working conditions. The city itself was highly praised as well. The guests appreciated its culinary and cultural offer, and other attractions.

The organisational success of COP 14 comprised several factors, one of them being a well-prepared and well-managed hotel infrastructure, accompanied by a guest registration system. COP 14 organisers also provided comfortable transportation for summit attendees. Moreover, all conference participants could check the most up-to-date bus and tram schedules using an application that could be downloaded and installed on a cell phone - also in English. It comprised such information as: MTP fairground plan, or a daily COP 14 programme.

Małgorzata Snarska added - Poznań International Fair helped us organise the conference in a very efficient manner. In addition to plenary rooms and negotiation rooms, MTP provided space for the exhibition entitled „Technologies for Climate Protection", which totaled 7 thousand sq m and has been visited by 40 thousand people so far. The conference featured over 150 side events and prided itself on numerous innovative solutions, like the highly popular mobile phone application with a site plan, dictionary, digital tourist guide, and a programme of events updated several times a day. We did prove that Poland is ready for hosting major political events with an international status.

The lights were switched off for a few minutes on the MTP grounds on 10th December. This is the first sign and the launch of the worldwide Earth Hour campaign organised by the World Wildlife Fund, an international environmental organisation.

Each year, Earth Hour joins together private individuals, businesses and towns where building illuminations are switched off. The lights are switched off to symbolise the greatest threat to our planet: climate change. The participants of this action send a signal to politicians and call upon them to effectively fight global warming.

The launch and the announcement of the Earth Hour took place on the grounds of Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie during the COP 14 climate change summit on 10th December. The launch ceremony was attended by mayors of dozens of cities from all over the world participating in this initiative.

The lights went out for a few minutes at 7 p.m. in the trade fair Spire, Pavilion 3A, the Eastern Lobby and the Trade Fair Centre, thus launching the action all over the world.

It is worth remembering that the first Earth Hour took place in Sydney. In response to WWF's call, the inhabitants of this city switched off lights for an hour in over 2 million homes. A year later, 100 million people from 35 countries participated in the Earth Hour. The lights went out all over the world - from Australia, through Israel and Korea, up to the United States. The Niagara Falls, the Alcatraz Jail, the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Coliseum in Rome, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, as well as parts of Warsaw and Poznań went dark.

The third Earth Hour will be held on 28th March 2009. At 8.30 p.m. local time, one billion people all over the world, living in over 1,000 cities and 64 countries will participate in the Earth Hour organised by the WWF. Join the Earth Hour. Switch off your lights on 28th March 2009 at 8.30 p.m. local time and register at earthhour.org.

The UN Climate Change Conference - COP 14 is continuing without any disruption on the premises of the Poznań International Fair.

Global negotiations and workshops have been held for a week now. Everyday a few dozen meetings are held in the UN exterritorial area built on the premises of the Poznań International Fair. The delegates have worked hard in various contact groups and are now waiting for the final decisions of the summit. It is here in Poznań that decisions on CO2 emission reduction, adaptation to climate change, technology funding and transfer will be made. The delegates have also decided that the final agreement on combating climate change will be signed next year at the Copenhagen summit. It will replace the Kyoto Protocol after 2012.

Organization

Despite thousands of delegates who have arrived in Poznań, life in the city has not been disrupted for which credit should be given to the conference organizers and the authorities of Poznań. The delegates are very appreciative of the excellent working conditions on the premises of the Poznań International Fair.

They have welcomed a mobile phone application, specially developed and implemented for the first time at the COP conference. The application features the daily programme, which is updated several times a day, an interactive English-Polish dictionary, a guide to Poznań, information about special events, restaurants, hotels, etc. It helps save tons of paper that otherwise would have to be printed to cater for the needs of the conference participants. The application can be downloaded from http://cop14.looksoft.pl/

Numbers

COP 14 stands for as many as 34 conference rooms and two plenary rooms, altogether 42,000 square metres. Each room has a unique design, which relates to the Polish nature and the most beautiful places in Poland.

COP 14 is attended by delegations from 189 countries and 488 observer organizations. The total number of registered participants (government delegates, observers, the media) is over 11,000. With an additional 2,000 of technical staff, this is a record number of people present at the conference, much better than expected by UNFCCC Secretariat.

A record number of 6,000 delegates attended the first day of the conference. 1,500 delegates attended the plenary session. For the first time in COP history the opening ceremony was attended by two heads of governments - the prime minister of Poland and the prime minister of Denmark.

COP 14 is covered by media from all over the world - nearly 400 teams (altogether over 800 reporters).

Guests

Among very important persons that Poland is expecting to come to COP 14 are California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former US Vice President Al Gore and Bianka Jagger, the human rights defender.

This exposition is the key event accompanying COP 14 - the United Nations Conference on Climate Change.

The "Technologies for Climate Protection" show comprises around 120 most important and original devices and installations from 20 countries. Climate protection technologies - such as cutting-edge hydrogen-powered solutions, energy-efficient cars and eco-friendly insulating materials - are displayed on an area of 7 thousand square metres. Exhibition visitors will also have a chance to see individual expositions of companies and institutions involved in the protection of climate and environment.

The exhibit will also feature exotic inventions which are typical of specific regions of the world. The most interesting ones will include: the hanging gardens from Bangladesh, the fog catchers used on the Cap Verde Islands, which allow for water to be captured from the atmosphere, a solar internet café from Gambia, as well as a dancefloor which produces electricity or the first no-waste city in the world with zero CO2 emissions.

What is more, visitors will be able to take part in the construction of hand-made solar collectors or test their skills in driving a car in an environmental driving simulator. They will have at their disposal an interactive game, which will present the Earth's climate change to reflect the different results of the negotiations on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

All the inventions at the exhibition are presented in five thematic groups: energy saving, renewable energy sources, environmentally friendly transport, adaptation to climate change and other different designs. The section of renewable energy sources includes the largest number of exhibits; in addition, it is subdivided into groups related to biomass, wind and solar energy.

The exhibition "Technologies for Climate Protection" is the personal initiative of the Minister of the Environment, Mr. Maciej Nowicki. It is the first project of this type to be held as a side event to the United Nations Climate Change Conference - COP 14. The exhibition is a unique event on a global scale, as it presents a whole spectrum of possible technical solutions designed to protect the earth's climate.

The "Global Warming" show presents 150 posters designed by the students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. This event is a part of a broader cycle entitled "Partnership for Climate", developed by the Ministry of Environment. The project has been carried out by two poster studios: headed by Professors Grzegorz Marszałek and Eugeniusz Skorwider.

The exhibition is open until Sunday, 14 December on the International Poznań Fair Grounds. The admittance is free.

Its anniversary edition held under the theme: "Technology for Earth's Climate" will feature almost 800 companies from over 20 countries.

The Polish agriculture is constantly improving. Thanks to the EU subsidies and due to other factors, Polish farmers can more and more often afford to buy the latest technologies, which leads to improved quality of their products. The development and progress experienced in the Polish agriculture after Poland’s accession to the European Union can be best seen at the FARMA International Trade Fair of Animal Breeding and Rural Development held on 3-5 October 2008.

FARMA brings a great potential for gaining knowledge on animal breeding and husbandry. Thanks to the support of investments in farms, this potential is increasingly often used and determines higher competitiveness of Polish rural areas. FARMA has one objective every year - to present products and solutions that make breeding efforts in farms better, more modern and more profitable.

At the upcoming FARMA, exhibitors from 13 countries (Poland, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Turkey) will present new market offers and a rich portfolio of machines and devices used in animal production, equipment for animal breeding facilities and construction of breeding facilities. The visitors will also have an opportunity to see a wide offer of producers and distributors of animal feed, foodstuff additives, veterinary equipment and products, as well as animal breeding material.

NEW - FARMA Show

What should an appropriately functioning barn with modern design look like? This is the question to be answered during Farma Show, a special area with a model barn including all necessary equipment, devices and tools. Farma Show will feature presentations of barn assembly and construction systems, demonstrations of cattle stations, shows of feed distributors and machinery used in barn operations. TOP AGRAR POLSKA Magazine is the media partner of Farma Show. De Heus AGRA-MATIC is the expert partner of the project. FARMA Show - Pavilion 3A.

Market premieres

FARMA is very popular among exhibitors since it is a great opportunity to present offers to professional visitors interested in increasing quality and developing their farms. Polish and foreign exhibitors have prepared almost 100 new market offers especially for the show. They will be easier to find thanks to special Nowość FARMA 2008 (NEW at FARMA 2008) signs on the stands. Moreover, a detailed description of products is available in "Rolnicze Aktualności Targowe" [Agricultural Trade Fair News] and on the website.

The pavilion of "small homelands"

The local colours of village fairs, sounds of folk music and tables groaning with traditional regional food - this is just a sneak preview of what can be admired in the Pavilion of the Regions (Pavilions 7 and 7A). This is where local governments, producers of regional and traditional food, handicraft and folk artists gather each year to arrange a special exhibition of regional products, including cultural and culinary heritage. Polish regions use the opportunity to promote themselves during the show and present a rich offer of interesting tourist attractions, local traditions and rites. The attention of the trade fair visitors is also attracted by folk bands wearing colourful costumes and performing regional songs and dances. The exposition is supplemented with the annual exhibition of traditional and regional products organised by the Polish Chamber of Regional and Local Products.

PRO-HORTI Horticultural Contracting Exhibition - a new event addressed to producers and distributors of products and services related to gardening products and equipment used in greenhouses, foil tunnels, vegetable farming and fruit growing. The first day of the event (2 October) is addressed solely to invited professionals following prior registration. The new organisation of meetings will make it easier for exhibitors to present their offers, while all visitors will be able to devote this day to business talks and conclusion of contracts with suppliers.

With nearly 400 animal breeders from all over Poland and abroad, and about 2000 most valuable animals representing almost all breeds, the 23rd National Animal Breeding Exhibition promises to be a truly exciting event. The Exhibition, which is scheduled to take place on 3-5 October 2008 concurrently with the FARMA International Trade Fair of Animal Breeding and Rural Development, will be housed in eight exhibition pavilions and in the open grounds of the Poznań International Fair.

The tradition of holding agricultural exhibitions accompanied by livestock shows in Poland spans nearly 200 years. The largest Animal Breeding Exhibition took place in Poznań in 1929, during the Polish National Exhibition. Interestingly, it was also recognised as Europe's largest animal show, with the organisers bringing together a total of 2,656 animals.

This year's Exhibition will feature horses, beef and dairy cattle, pigs, sheep, goat, fur animals, poultry, ostriches, freshwater fish, bees, as well as pigeons and ornamental poultry. Special highlights will include displays of foxes, polecats, green frogs and farm snails. The Exhibition will be complemented by national expositions of breeders representing France, Ireland, Belgium, Germany and the UK. Other attractions will include exhibition stands promoting Polish and foreign joint ventures specialising in livestock breeding and trading all over Poland.

Winners' chart

Months of breeding effort get rewarded with Champion, Vice-Champion and Super-Champion titles granted to the most valuable animals presented at the show. The awards are highly sought-after trophies among livestock breeders, which is why several hundred animals are entered for the contest each year. On the first day of the Exhibition (3 October), professional judges will assess livestock in the show rings and stalls against pre-defined parameters and award them grades. The following day will see a special ceremony to present awards and honorary mentions, including the Cup of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In 2008, animals will compete in four pavilions. The show ring in Pavilion 2 will become a venue for displaying dairy cattle. Beef cattle, in turn, will be presented in the show ring in Pavilion 6a. Other attractions usually drawing huge crowds include a spectacular horse show, which will take place in the show ring in Pavilion 5 this year, and displays of pigs and domestic breeds, scheduled to be held in Pavilion 12.

Domestic Breeds Exhibition

Poland boasts a long tradition of activities aimed at protecting domestic breeds, which is why the country has successfully retained a wide genetic diversity of different species and preserved a host of precious old animal breeds. Nevertheless, the declining number of animals within some of the existing breeds causes concern for their survival. In order to save them, the most precious breeds have been covered by special programmes for the protection of genetic resources. Initiatives have also been launched with a view to reinstating animal breeds now regarded as extinct. The formula of the National Animal Breeding Exhibition fits very well in this general trend.

The Domestic Breeds Exhibition, which has been held alongside the National Animal Breeding Exhibition for several years now, is always hugely popular with visitors. The show features animals of unique livestock breeds representing Poland's genetic heritage, including Polish Red and Polish White-backed cattle; Silesian and Małopolski horse breeds, Hucul ponies and Polish Koniks, Pulawska pigs, Zlotnicka White and Zlotnicka spotted pig, Wrzosowka (Polish Heath) sheep, Swiniarka sheep, Olkuska and Wielkopolska sheep, coloured Polish merino and pastel foxes. The exposition of domestic breeds will be accommodated in Pavilion 12.

First-timers at the National Animal Breeding Exhibition

Alpacas and zubrons will make their debut at this year's Exhibition. Alpacas, which originate from South America, have become very popular farm animals throughout Europe over the past dozen years or so. Their popularity stems principally from the remarkable alpaca fibre, extremely lightweight and lustrous, a rare and luxurious product reaching high prices on worldwide markets. Zubrons are extraordinary animals, Polish hybrids of domestic cattle and European bison. At present, there are only several dozen of these huge animals, which achieve a maximum weight of 1200 kg, living in Poland.

Specialist knowledge

Similarly to previous years, visitors will benefit from a whole host of specialist meetings with experts in the field of animal breeding, veterinary science and animal hygiene. Exhibition stands organised by breeder associations participating in the trade fair will be provided with consulting and training desks, with animal husbandry specialists available to share their knowledge and experience. An event held every year during the Exhibition is the Veterinary and Breeding Forum organised by the Polish Society of Veterinary Sciences. This year's edition will be entirely devoted to pig and poultry breeding. In addition, the 10th Agricultural Forum will offer breeders an opportunity to discuss such topics as methods of identification, control and prevention of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy in sheep; horse and beef cattle breeding; as well as ostrich farming and sturgeon farming in Poland.

In a reply to the dynamic development of the catering market in Poland, the Polagra-Food Fair will undergo metamorphosis. The Catering Exhibition is going to be a separate fair, named the Gastro-Trendy International Catering Fair. Such a separation will enable to adjust the fair to the needs and expectations of the market participants even better. The International Trade Fair for Food and Catering Products Polagra-Food 2008 will include the following exhibitions: Food and Drinks, Wine and Spirits, Franchising and Store Equipment. Both fairs will take place on September 14-17 2009.
